iSchool Students of the Global Majority (iSGM) is a student-led group of IBPOC at UBC’s School of Information.

Abstract

Artist Jeffery Chong will share how his family research and profession in archives have shaped his artistic practice. He will talk about navigating through local archives to track his family history in Canada. Jeffery will also tell the story about discovering in the CBC Archives the news footage of his grandfather, and how it inspired his public art currently displayed in downtown Vancouver, Home Edition. Jeffery will conclude by sharing some works in progress. Please note: This event is reserved for IBPOC-identifying iSchool students and faculty.

Bio

Jeffery Chong is a media artist and film conservation technician living on the territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples. Jeffery’s media art uses photography, moving image, and archival research. His practice is rooted in family heritage, an identity forged from photographs and family stories. His work weaves explorations of form with these subjective histories. Jeffery has worked at the City of Vancouver Archives, and Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre. He most recently worked on the current exhibit at the Chinese Canadian Museum, The Paper Trail to the 1923 Chinese Exclusion Act.
